Tim Ward, of the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, received the District Attorney of the Year Award for
successful prosecution of an individual whose unnecessary acts caused the deaths of two (2) fire service
members when their spotter plane crashed in the mountains above Porterville.
Kerri Lopez, of the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, received the District Attorney of the Year Award
for successful prosecution of a male individual who doused his girlfriend with an ignitable liquid and set her on fire.
The suspect then fled to Mexico. The individual was later apprehended in the US, brought to trial,
and successfully prosecuted by DA Lopez.
Frank Furtaw, Fire Investigator for Tulare City Fire, was awarded the Director’s Award for his dedication
and time spent in developing Advanced Explosives Recognition class. It has become an annual event
and outstanding training for law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the state of California.
